Beware of con artists using a government impersonation scam to trick taxpayers into buying gift cards to pay fake tax debts. These people can become very threatening on the phone and harass you with fake debt, they will tell you that you have been linked to criminal activity or that your identity has been stolen. Do not fall for these scams ! The IRS NEVER REQUESTS PAYMENT IN THE FORM OF GIFT CARDS. Another trick is to use compromised email accounts requesting gift cards for family, friends or co workers. If it seems fishy, it probably is. These people are clever and can be very nasty on the phone.. hang up and report to the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting page on the IRS website.
